calendar10AD – Jesus is (probably) aged 14 and finishes his education without passing any SATS or attaining any targets

110AD – the phrase “Catholic Church” is used for the first time (by St. Ignatius of Antioch)

210AD – birth in Iran of the heretic Mani, who divided the world into the realms of the evil material god and the good spiritual God (a heresy which recurs regularly, see 1210AD)

310AD – the Roman commander (later Emperor) Constantine, advancing on Rome, orders his troops to carry Christian insignia

410AD – Roman legionaries all recalled from Britain, opening the door to Anglo-Saxon Christianity

510AD Saint Benedict writes his Rule and founds the abbey of Monte Cassino

610AD – An Italian monk invents pretiola (“little rewards”), alias pretzels, to give to children who learn their prayers

710AD – the earliest surviving text, in Latin, of the “Apostles’ Creed”

810AD – completion of the illuminated Gospel “Book of Kells”, begun on Iona

910AD – beginning of the great Church reform inspired by the Burgundian abbey of Cluny

1010AD – Arab destruction of the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem is the springboard for the Crusades

1110AD – birth of St. Aelred, the Cistercian abbot of Rievaulx (Yorks.), the great champion of Christian friendship

1210AD – terrible massacre at Béziers in southern France during the war against the Cathars (see 210AD); “Kill them all! God will recognise his own!”

1310AD – beginning of the residency of the Popes at Avignon in France, the so-called “Babylonian Captivity”

1410AD – the order is given to burn all the books of the English reformer John Wyclif

1510AD – the first European church in India is built, by the Portuguese

1610AD – the famous Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci, promoter of inculturation in the faith, dies in Peking (Beijing)

1710AD – riots in London at the trial of Henry Sacheverell, who opposed Government leniency towards dissenters; his name later invoked in the Gordon Riots against Catholic Emancipation

1810AD – The parish priest of Dolores, Mexico, Father Miguel Hidalgo, leads an uprising of peasants against Spanish rule, so beginning the War of Independence

1910AD Pope Saint Pius X obliges all clergy to take the Anti-Modernist Oath
